Technically we can use the building now, but we’ve got to get lights. I’d say it will be at least another month before we are ready to move in.”

CULLMAN – Good news! Cullman American Legion Post 4 will soon be moving into their brand new building. What started out as wishful thinking for a brand new American Legion facility is about to become a reality.

“For years and years we have wanted to do a groundbreaking for the new post, but like everything else it was very costly,” said Dan Raley, American Legion Post 4 commander.  “Finally, we had one of our members, Don Reid, donate the land to us. So then we began working to raise funds so we could start working on the building.”

The American Legion, along with the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce and officials from the City of Good Hope, gathered together and held a groundbreaking ceremony in early February 2016. From there the progress has been rather slow, but steady. The finished American Legion post will have all the finest amenities such as a nice business office, a separate room for the American Legion Auxiliary to meet in, a kitchen and large open room where the main activities will take place.

The American Legion currently leases the VFW building for their meetings and events, but their lease expires in August. They hope to be in their brand new building way before then, though.

“We are finished with our part today, with the exception of the gutters, so the gutters will go on next week and then we will be finished,” said Brian Clements from Bama Steel Structures, Inc. “I think they have someone coming in next week to start framing things up on the inside.”

“Bama Steel should be through early next week, they still have to put the gutters in,” said Reid. “After that we have to start doing the inside; putting the walls up and that sort of thing. I’ve got to go talk to the mayor and see what he requires us to have as far as licenses, people and all that.

“Technically we can use the building now, but we’ve got to get lights,” he chuckled. “I’d say it will be at least another month before we are ready to move in.”

Big things are happening for the American Legion these days. If you are in the area, make sure to check out their future home. It is located at 181 Reid Road, Cullman, AL 35057. For more information about the American Legion, call Commander Raley at 256- 347-4732.
