Former Cullman Co. volunteer coach pleads guilty to raping student

CULLMAN COUNTY, AL (WBRC) – A former volunteer coach at a Cullman County school has pleaded guilty to raping a student.

Spencer Jackson Byrd, 22, was arrested on Feb. 18, 2015.

Byrd, a volunteer basketball coach for Fairview High School, was accused of having sex with a student who was 15 years old at the time.

He was originally charged with rape, sodomy and enticing a child for immoral purposes. 

Court records show Byrd pleaded guilty to second-degree rape and engaging in a sex act with a student.

He was sentenced to a 10 year split sentence but will only serve nine months in jail. He will serve six months in the Cullman County Jail and then the remaining 90 days on weekends.

As part of his plea deal, Byrd is ordered not to have any contact with the victim. He will also have to register as a sex offender and be under supervised probation for five years.
