CULLMAN – The Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) is an organization that supports all nonprofits in Cullman County through grant funds.  The group held its monthly meeting on Tuesday night, with plenty of requests to consider.

With the floor open to guests, the following requests were made:

  • Jerrell Crook requested money to go toward the new Cold Springs Community Center.
  • Ann Carden requested money to be used for improvements to the Bethsadia Volunteer Fire Department Building.
  • Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail requested $12,000 to repair the city’s recreation center.
  • Heath Yearwood, principal of West Point High School, requested money to resurface the school’s track. He also represented the Town of West Point.
  • Mitch Witcher, Good Hope High School baseball coach, requested $12,000 to finish the concession stand at the high school. This was approved.
  • Laurita Hogeland requested money to add lights to the Cold Springs High School baseball field.
  • Ann Moore, director of the Cullman Farmer’s Market, requested $8,000 to build a shed to house all the chairs that are needed to seat people at festivals such as Oktoberfest and the Strawberry Festival.
  • Toby Bates from Logan Fire and Rescue requested money to complete the concrete work in the parking lot to make it handicap-accessible. Bates stated that this would also help the senior citizens who use the building as a senior center.
  • Councilman Alexander Twitty from Colony requested $12,000 to go for the town’s Continuing Education / Summer Food program. This was approved.

In the end, four grants were awarded this month- two for the Town of Colony and Good Hope High School (detailed above), one for the United Way of Cullman County ($12,000) and one for the Center Hill Community Center ($10,000).

It was also noted that the CCCDC has received several thank-you cards recently from various organizations that have been granted money this year.

The next meeting is set for Tuesday, July 12 at 6 p.m. at the North Alabama Agriplex.

The CCCDC grants funds to 501-c3 entities and any qualifying public facility. There is a $12,000 cap per grant request.
