CULLMAN – The North Alabama Agriplex is hosting another family-friendly, volunteer opportunity. The Sweet Potato Drop will be held this Saturday, May 21, beginning at 9 a.m.

The event will be a chance for Cullman citizens of all ages to come together to help those in our community who are not as fortunate as others. Partnering with the Society of St. Andrew, the Agriplex will need help bagging the 10,000 pounds of donated sweet potatoes into five pound bags. From there, the bags will be loaded and donated to numerous local agencies who care for folks who are down on their luck.

This particular gleaning event will require more volunteers than usual due to the vast donation. “We need to get the word out as much as possible given that we'll need to have 75 to 100 volunteers if we want to get done in one day,” stated Agriplex VISTA Hannah Kren.

“These potatoes, if not being redistributed at an event such as this, would end up in a compost pile and going to waste. With the help of volunteers, we will be able to reclaim a large amount of 'food waste' and put it to good use benefiting people struggling with hunger in our community.”

As always, church youth groups, multigenerational family members, groups of friends and individuals are strongly encouraged to participate as volunteering provides a bonding experience that all can feel good about.

Saturday’s event will be held at the North Alabama Agriplex at 1714 Talley Ho Street next to the entrance of the Peinhardt Historical Farm in Cullman.  Slated to begin at 9 a.m., the event will continue until the work is complete. People are welcome to participate in the entire event or stop by to help for an hour or so.
