GOOD HOPE – Saturday night, May 14, at The Cotton Gin is guaranteed to be an entertaining and maybe even a bit of a rowdy night. Local country sensation, Lane Maury, is slated to begin picking and grinning at 6 p.m., and his music, along with The Cotton Gin’s fine seafood, will have everybody delighted and wanting more.
To look at Maury, you’d never guess the young man has lived long enough to know anything about hardship. And, a quality country singer has got to know about pain and loss else there’s no credibility. Unless you’re into country pop, which has its place. But, it’s place isn’t with Lane Maury and his music.
Citing his daddy as his first favorite musician, Maury said, “I’ve been singing, playing and been around country music my whole life. My daddy played steel guitar in several bands even way before I was born. He played steel guitar with Roger Miller, Farron Young and even played the Tennessee State Fair one time with Elvis. So I have loved country music my whole life.”
Known to throw in some southern rock with his country stylings, Maury’s repertoire is as diverse as his life has been so far. Knowing great sorrow when he lost his beloved big brother and number one fan a little over a year ago, Maury was able to express his grief through his music. But, even that was difficult due to a 4-wheeler accident which left him unable to play at all for over five months. When he plays guitar for long periods of time even now, he endures cramping and stiffness in his hand.
Maury has also known great joy in his life, which gives his music a well-rounded duality making the sound complete. His pride and joy is found in the pink cheeks and wide grin of a petite little blonde. Don’t get the wrong idea when I tell you that she like to sit on his lap and has been known to even drool on him in the past. Two-and-a-half-year-old Laney gave her daddy’s heart just about all of the delight that it could handle when she was born.
Maury has been playing around town for a few years now at local restaurants, bars and Sundays at church. His sound is unmistakable and the quality and tone of his voice is a rarity these days.
Considering his inspirations, though, it makes perfect sense.
“My biggest inspiration is George Jones. I grew up on old country and George Jones has always been my favorite and he had a voice and range nobody would replicate. Also Merle Haggard, Hank Sr., Alan Jackson, Randy Travis are my biggest influences.”
He promised, “Saturday night at the Cotton Gin, everybody can expect a good time, some real country music like people don't get to hear anymore. No pop country, though, but maybe even some southern rock. It’ll definitely be a good time!”
The Cotton Gin is conveniently located in Good Hope at 123 Lindsey Road off of Old Highway 69. Maury will be taking the stage at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
