CULLMAN – With the overwhelming prevalence of diabetes in our local community, education is the key to prevention and treatment to help those who suffer from the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is providing its DEEP – Diabetes Empowerment Education Program to those adults diagnosed with diabetes and people without diabetes. All are welcome.
The six-session program will focus on understanding and monitoring your body, diabetes risk factors, the importance of physical activity and meal planning, complications from the disease and learning about medication options.
As 9.3 percent of the population in our country is living with diabetes, the tools taught during the classes will prove to be indispensable to community members. Each year, 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed, making the educational sessions an asset to many.
Presented by Donna Shanklin, regional extension agent in ACES Human Nutrition, Diet & Health, the six-week program will be on Wednesday afternoons from 1- 2:30 p.m. beginning May 11 and continuing weekly through June 29.
The classes will be held at the Cullman ACES office at 402 Arnold St. NE, Suite G-1. Registration can be taken by phone at 256-737-9386 or by contacting Shanklin at drs0009@aces.edu.
