CULLMAN – On April 28, the Cullman County Board of Education held a special-called board meeting where the additional $68,862 needed for Fairview High School’s stadium renovation was approved. Work on the stadium, which had been stalled due to the need for more funding, is now once again moving forward.

Engineering firm Terracon and Harris Direct cited the need for additional soil stabilization before new bleachers can be installed, hence the need for funding beyond the original estimate.

Several local county schools were granted requests for out of state field trips to attend the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) Championships. The national competition will be attended by students from Welti Elementary, West Point Middle School, Fairview Middle School and Good Hope High School. All of the participants will be traveling via private vehicles and no general fund monies will be required for the competitions, held in mid-May, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Lastly, Good Hope High School’s Scholar’s Bowl Team was approved to travel to Dallas, Texas to compete in the National Scholar’s Bowl Tournament over Memorial Day Weekend. The competition is limited to 272 teams nationwide, therefore simply making it to the Nationals is an astounding accomplishment which the team should be commended for before the event even opens on May 28.

The next regular meeting of the Cullman County Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Office Board Room with the work session beginning an hour earlier at 5:30 p.m. The office is located at 402 Arnold St. NE in Cullman and the public is encouraged to attend meetings.
