CULLMAN – On Saturday, April 30, the Cullman County Rescue Squad held a car show at the Cullman County Fairgrounds. Not only were there amazing cars on display, but there were also vendors and food trucks. The squad hopes to make the show an annual event.
“We are having our first annual car show,” said Rebecca Tanksley, Cullman County Rescue Squad captain. “We are raising money to help with the upkeep on our ambulances and for medical supplies in general. We have antique cars, a General Lee replica and a go-cart replica of the General Lee. We also have a Kid’s Corner and a dunking booth; they dunked me and some of the other officers earlier,” she chuckled. “Everyone had a good time!”
The Blood Bank was at the event taking donations, and volunteers from the Red Cross were on hand passing out disaster relief information. Several of the vendors gave away prizes throughout the day. The squad gave away Rock the South platinum passes and a diamond necklace.
“This is a wonderful day for a very good cause,” said Ann Nuss, vendor. “We couldn’t do without the Cullman County Rescue Squad. It’s been a pleasure, meeting and speaking with all the people that have come through today. It has been a lot of fun,” she smiled as she showed off her lovely wall hangings at her booth. “There’s been a good crowd of people here today.”
The Red Cross booth had all kinds of information available.
“This year we are handing out disaster preparedness information to the community,” said Kristen Guy, Red Cross volunteer. “May is Preparedness Month and so we are just trying to make sure that everybody has information and if they have any questions they have our contact information. “We are always looking for volunteers, especially for our Disaster Action Team,” she added. “We respond to home fires and any time there are storm damages. We really need volunteers.”
The Cullman County Rescue Squad was established in 1962 and became part of the Alabama Association of Rescue Squads in 1968.The Squad is made up of 35 volunteers. They work closely with Cullman County Emergency Management Agency, local law enforcement agencies, Cullman EMS and the United Way of Cullman County to help support the citizens of Cullman County and surrounding counties in times of need. They have a storm spotter team and a dive team that can be activated in a matter of minutes.
