West Point Scholar’s Bowl Team Headed for National Championship

WEST POINT – The West Point High School Scholar’s Bowl team is a force to be reckoned with, and they aren’t slowing down any time soon. After winning the Class 5A title on Friday, April 8, at the Alabama Scholastic Competition Association (ASCA) High School State Tournament, the team went on to the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) 44th Annual Snead State Invitational in Boaz on April 15, winning their pool and going 3-0 in the playoffs, beating Class 7A Buckhorn in the championship match.

At the Snead State Invitational, the oldest scholar's bowl invitational in Alabama, teams were grouped in pool play by size, with the winners of each pool playing in a single-elimination playoff for the championship. 7A Hoover and 4A Good Hope were the other semi-finalists.

West Point’s scores at Snead State were:

Round 1:

West Point – 600, Ashville – 30

Round 2:

West Point – 540, Leeds – 30

Round 3:

West Point – 470, Hokes Bluff – 60

Round 4:

West Point – 430, Good Hope – 240

Round 5:

West Point – 610, Oneonta – 20

Quarter-Final:

West Point – 480, Sand Rock- 90

Semi-Final:

West Point – 370, Good Hope – 210

Championship:

West Point – 300, Buckhorn – 260

So what’s up next for the team? They’re headed to Chicago for the NAQT 2016 Small School National Championship Tournament April 30-May1.

“I just want to say that I'm proud of this group of kids,” said Lee Henry, West Point High School scholar’s bowl coach. “They've worked hard over the past few years to get where they are. They've proven that they are not only the best 5A team in the state, but that they can beat the bigger schools as well.”
