CULLMAN – It was a beautiful day for soccer as the Cullman Bearcats welcomed the John Carroll Catholic Cavaliers to the pitch at Oliver Woodard Stadium. As the game got underway, it didn’t take long for Cullman to show why they are the number one ranked team in Class 6A.
Cole Gerding got the Cats on the board at the 35:40 mark of the first by blasting a header to the far post for the goal. Ben Walker picked up the assist on the scoring play. A short 17 seconds later, Seth Andrews got a put back goal when Miguel Tizapa’s shot was deflected off the keeper and he was there to clean up the trash.
Two and a half minutes later, Brazilian exchange student Gui Albuquerque streaked a shot across the goalie box from the near post to the far post, finding the back of the net to put Cullman up 3-0 less than 10 minutes into the game.
Albuquerque would add his second goal three minutes later when he rocketed a 22-yard shot from the top of the box, past a diving John Carroll keeper. Peyton Brown would round out the 5-0 Cullman first half by lobbing an easy shot over the charging Cavalier goalie.
Cullman moved the ball well in the second half, looking for the perfect pass before taking a shot. Gerding added the final Cats goal as he booted in a clean-up goal when Albuquerque’s shot was deflected off the keeper.
Cullman took the game 6-0.
