Obituary: Reverend Thomas Edwin Self

Reverend Thomas Edwin Self, age 92, of Oneonta, passed away on April 2, 2015.  He was a retired United Methodist Minister after more than 40 years. Reverend Self was a member of the North Alabama Conference and Lester Memorial United Methodist Church. He graduated from Mississippi State University, where he played on two SEC Championship baseball teams and graduated from Emory University with a Master’s Degree in Divinity. Reverend Self served in the United States Army, during World War II in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. He enjoyed golfing and gardening. Reverend Self was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Stuart Self, an infant daughter, Sherry Self and his parents, John Bailey and Amanda Yarbrough Self Garner.

Survivors include: two sons, Tom and wife, Cindy Self, of Oneonta and Bob and wife, Marianne Self, of Helena; seven grandchildren, Barbie and husband, Sid Whitehead, Chris and wife, Erica Self, Will Self, Maggie and husband, Bo Battles, Kelley and husband, Seaborn Whatley, Robyn and husband, Justin Forrester and Tyler and wife, Taylor Self and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at Lester Memorial United Methodist Church, on April 6, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. Reverend Barry Hallman officiated. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery. Lemley Funeral Home was in charge.

Pallbearers were: Chris Self, Will Self, Bo Battles, Sid Whitehead, Seaborn Whatley, Justin Forrester and Tyler Self.
