CULLMAN – Phase one repair work on U.S. Highway 278 West at New Bridge/Kugler Creek is now complete, pending inspection and removal of traffic control, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation. The shoulder closure is still in place.
“All work on the phase one repair contract (excavation and construction of soil nail retaining wall on upper slope) is complete. Traffic control (including the concrete barriers closing off the shoulder) will be removed following inspection early next week (week of April 3) and placement of (a) guardrail,” said ALDOT North Region Information Specialist Seth Burkett.
The phase one work should reduce the load on the retaining wall underneath the bridge. Phase one included excavation of the upper slope west of the bridge and construction of a 20-foot-high soil nail retaining wall.
The contract for phase one was $753,770, awarded to GeoStabilization International (GSI), but Burkett said the final numbers are not in yet.
GSI, a company from Grand Junction, Colorado, submitted “the low bid of $753,770 in an emergency letting” and has performed work for the state previously.
In phase two, which will be contracted separately, the retaining wall at the foot of the slope will be repaired.
