CULLMAN – Hundreds of eager children and their families waited patiently for the start of the Sportsman Lake Easter Egg Hunt Saturday morning. With the sun shining brightly, it didn’t take long for the temperatures to warm up and for the littlest of Cullman citizens to begin their scampering toward the pastel eggs.
Families began lining up at early as 7 a.m. this morning, a full two hours before the start time. With two hunt areas, one for children under the age of 5 and the other for ages 6-12, the over 4,500 eggs didn’t stand a chance hiding from the tiny hands seeking them.
Tammy Raymond brought her 9-month-old granddaughter, Eternity, to this year’s hunt continuing the family tradition. She has been attending the community event with her own children since its first year. “There was only 15-20 kids the first year. My kids filled up their bags with eggs and were worn out before all of the eggs were collected,” she shared. “I don’t think there’ll be any eggs left this year!”
The Easter Bunny was a big hit posing for photos, waving and welcoming everyone to the park. County Parks Director Doug Davenport reported that well over a million calories in candy was scattered in the eggs throughout the playground and splash pad play area.
With free admission the park has been popular for decades with both children and adults. Sportsman Lake Park has a large area for children, walking and biking trails, a wildflower garden, dog park, pavilions available for rent, campsites and much more. It is also home to Veteran’s Memorial Park which honors those who have served in all branches of the military. Conveniently located off of Highway 31 by the Cullman County Fairgrounds, Sportsman Lake Park is a source of pride for our community.
