CULLMAN – Approximately one-third of the way through its 30-day contract on the Highway 278 West slope at Kugler Creek, GeoStabilization International (GSI) is diligently working six days a week to complete phase one of the repair. Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) expects the work to be completed sometime later this month.
The phase one work “will reduce the load on the (retaining) wall. Phase one includes excavation of the upper slope west of the bridge and construction of a 20-foot-high soil nail retaining wall,” according to North Region Information Specialist for ALDOT, Seth Burkett.
GSI, a company from Grand Junction, Colorado, submitted “the low bid of $753,770 in an emergency letting” and has performed work for the state previously.
For the remainder of this initial phase, Burkett does not expect the need for traffic rerouting.
To be contracted separately, the second phase will complete the remainder of the retaining wall and slope repairs at a later date.
ALDOT reminds the public that while the “current conditions pose no immediate danger to the traveling public,” the work area is off-limits to foot traffic.
