CULLMAN – Darrell Hicks wants to be the next Chairman of the Cullman County Commission.

Hicks, former Cullman County Associate Commissioner, Place 1, said that one of the main reasons that he’s trying to get the job back is that he’s had so many requests to run again.

He also believes he can straighten things up and get things in the order that he believes they should be in.

“Commissioner Walker has been in there, but he hasn’t gotten much done,” Hicks said. “And that Parker guy doesn’t know anything about the commission.”

Hicks has several things he wants to work on if elected to the position. According to him, the county roads are in a crisis. He also wants to see the completion of the County’s first public shooting range. “We all believe in the Second Amendment rights, gun sales are at an all-time high, everyone has guns, but not everyone has a place to go shoot them,” he said.

Hicks has long-term goals as well, such as having a consistent presence in Montgomery, pushing the needs of Cullman and getting projects moved forward.

He says he wants to use the Commissioner’s office to its full extent. “I feel like the three commissioners end up just running around putting out small fires. I want to sit down and have us all work on a long-term plan,” Hicks said.

There are many ideas that Hicks states have been talked about for years, and he wants to make them happen.

A new judicial building with much better security than the current courthouse, including more secure parking for judges and an easier and safer way to take prisoners to and from the courthouse is one of those ideas. The space and office vacancies left behind at the current courthouse, Hicks said, can be filled by the county offices that are scattered around the county. It would be a consolidation of all the county offices into one building.

Hicks has been cattle farming since he was last involved with the County Commission. He will have farm help if elected to the position of county commissioner.

The primary election is on March 1. In addition to Hicks, candidates for Commission Chairman are incumbent Kenneth Walker and businessman Eric L. Parker.
