Repair work on U.S. 278 slope to begin Monday, Feb. 22, weather permitting

HUNTSVILLE – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) today announced the first of two phases of geotechnical repairs at the U.S. 278 bridge over Kugler Creek in Cullman County is expected to begin Monday, Feb. 22, weather permitting.

Geostabilization International (GSI) submitted the low bid of $753,770 in an emergency letting. The contract will provide GSI 30 days to perform the work, which includes stabilizing the upper portion of the slope by constructing a soil nail retaining wall.

The second phase of repair, which will be contracted separately, will address the remainder of the slope and retaining wall.

An EarthCam was placed Wednesday so that the retaining wall can be monitored from off-site. ALDOT personnel were at the bridge today to reposition the camera.
