You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do”Eleanor Roosevelt
CULLMAN – A cancer diagnosis is the definition of facing fear. Almost immediately, an ordinary person becomes a warrior preparing for the fight of a lifetime. But, battles are not meant to be fought alone. Support is not just helpful but necessary in the fight against cancer. Cullman County Bosom Buddies Foundation provides that support.
On Saturday, April 2, the Cullman County Bosom Buddies Foundation invites the citizens of Cullman to share in the fight at the Colors of Cancer Day at Cullman County Fairgrounds. The fun-filled day will include a 5K race, parade, drum line competition, balloon release and appearance from Cindy the Pink Firetruck. Bounce houses will be available for children, with vendors and concessions set up inside the Lioness Building.
The 5K race kicks off the day at 8 a.m. It begins at the fairgrounds with race day registration available at 7 a.m. Preregistration forms are available at local gyms and businesses or can be obtained by contacting Amanda Rogers at amanda.rogers@crmchospital.com or Becky Richardson at brichardson1957@yahoo.com.
The 5K race fee is discounted at $25 until March 29, when the cost goes to $30. The race will be bib timed and the medals will be awarded immediately following the race. Strollers are welcome for the race, but pets will not be allowed.
The parade, let by Cindy the Pink Firetruck and a pink patrol car from Orange Beach, will begin at 10 a.m. near the (north) Cullman Shopping Center and will travel to the fairgrounds along Highway 31 North. At the fairgrounds, the drum line competition, featuring many band members from throughout the county, will begin at noon.
Cindy the Pink Firetruck (www.pinkfiretrucks.org) will be featured at the fairgrounds after the parade. All cancer survivors are invited and encouraged to sign Cindy. Also expected are several other pink firetrucks from the area.
Balloons will be sold for $5 each. 27 different balloon colors, each relating to a specific cancer, will be available. A name or message can be written on a card attached to the balloon before the release. Scheduled for 2 p.m., the balloon release will be an inspirational activity for all ages.
“Colors of Cancer Day will be an annual event. We want everyone to come out and enjoy the day. This will be a day of celebration,” shared Bosom Buddies board member Judy Grissom. “Bosom Buddies made this event possible in order to make the public aware of the resource that is available for the Cullman area.”
The Cullman County Bosom Buddies Foundation is a 501(c3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide financial assistance to Cullman area cancer patients who are experiencing financial hardships during their treatments. All donations are used for cancer patients in the Cullman County area.
