HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s baseball team prevailed in its weekend series against Volunteer State, winning three games at James C. Bailey Stadium.
The Lions (3-2) swept a pair of games on Saturday, winning 2-1 and 7-4, and split the final two games on Sunday, earning a walk-off victory in the finale.
Sophomore third baseman Stephen Dobbs went 5 for 11 in the series with a pair of doubles, a triple and five RBIs.
Freshman Maison Goodwin had a double and a triple among his three hits against Vol State, scoring three runs and driving in two.
Cole Collins collected four RBIs for the Lions and Andrew Plunkett had two doubles and two RBIs.
Wallace State edged Vol State 2-1 in the opener. The Pioneers scored a run in the top of the first before a two-out, two-run double by Dobbs handed the Lions a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Those were the only runs Garrett Suchey (1-0) and Zack Moon needed. Suchey, making his first appearance since 2014, recorded nine strikeouts in five innings, allowing only one run on four hits. Moon tossed two perfect innings for the save.
Jesse Scott followed with a strong start for the Lions, yielding two runs in five innings as the winning pitcher. He struck out three in a 7-4 victory.
Lane Wallace earned the save, striking out five in two innings. He gave up a run on three hits.
On Sunday, Wallace State dropped the first game, 4-2.
The Lions rebounded with a 5-4 walk-off triumph to claim the series, scoring the winning run on a Collins’ sacrifice fly, one of three sac flies in the game for the Cullman grad.
Will Eiland (1-1) was the winning pitcher in relief for Wallace State.
Wallace State returns to James C. Bailey Stadium on Friday, hosting Vincennes University at 3 p.m. Wabash Valley College then visits for a doubleheader on both Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. each day.
