Sister Margaret Mary Fisher, a Benedictine Sister of Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, died early on the morning of January 8, 2016, at the age of 92. Sister Tonette Sperando, O.S.B., Prioress, led the prayers for the Sisters gathered at her bedside.
Vespers of the Dead will be prayed on Sunday, January 10, at 5 p.m. in Sacred Heart Monastery Chapel; visitation will follow. Rev. John O’Donnell, O.S.B. will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, January 11, at 3 p.m. in Sacred Heart Monastery Chapel. Rev. John O’Donnell and Sister Tonette Sperando, Prioress, will preside at the interment in the Community’s cemetery.
Sister Margaret Mary was born in 1923 in Minneapolis, MN. In 1942, she married George Fisher with whom she had four children. The family traveled for many years with the Navy before settling in Pensacola, FL, where Sister Margaret Mary spent ten years on the staff of Pensacola Catholic High School. After her husband died in 1965 and after her children were grown, Sister Margaret Mary began to discern a religious vocation. She entered the community of Sacred Heart Monastery in 1979, made her First Monastic Profession in 1981, and her Final Profession in 1984. As a Sister, she served for eleven years as a Pastoral Minister at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham. She also served for nine years on the administrative staff of Benedictine Manor in Cullman.
Sister Margaret Mary was predeceased by her parents, Marsham and Margaret Mary Wright; husband George Fisher, Sr.; brother John E. Fisher; son George Fisher, Jr.; and daughter Judith McCafferty.
Survivors include her Benedictine Sisters; two children, John Fisher and Janet Fisher Hardesty; son-in-law Patrick McCafferty (Judith) and daughter-in-law Phyllis Fisher (George, Jr.); ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
