SULLIGENT — An explosive offense by the Sulligent Blue Devils broke open a close AHSAA Class 2A playoff game with the Cold Springs Eagles Thursday night.
The Blue Devils ran off 28 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter and eliminated the Eagles from the postseason by the final score of 63-27.
Cold Springs allowed Sulligent 342 yards total offense in the first half with the Blue Devils scoring on six possessions.
The Eagles gave up a score the first time Sulligent touched the football and was down 7-0 less than 2:00 into the contest.
But Rod Elliott's squad answered by a solid drive with Nic Rollo finishing the series on a 5-yard run. The extra point by Fisher Willoughby had the score even at 7-7 with 5:48 to go in the first.
But the Blue Devils produced a second TD less than a minute after the Cold Springs score. The Devils were back on top 14-7.
Cold Springs once again met the challenge. The Eagles ran it downfield with Rollo scoring and the game was tied at 14-14 after the first stanza.
Eight seconds into the second period started the onslaught for Sulligent. The Blue Devils jumped back on top 21-14 and would extend the advantage to 42-14 by halftime.
Sulligent put two more touchdowns on the scoreboard in the third period and was able to keep the Eagles in check. It was 56-14 going into the final period.
Rollo got his third TD early in the quarter and a score from Christian Crandall with 5:30 remaining had the Eagles down 63-27.
Cold Springs finishes 6-5 on the season with its second straight postseason appearance. The Eagles have compiled the best record in the county the last 3 seasons with 20 wins against 11 losses.
