CULLMAN – Dr. David Shupe has recently begun working at Cullman Primary Care. Shupe, 30, left Atlanta for the small-town atmosphere of Cullman.
“Also my wife is from the north Alabama area, too,” he said.
Shupe’s specialty lies in all-inclusive family care.
“I don’t want to send you to anyone else if I can help it,” he said. Shupe is equipped to treat everyone in the family, from babies to seniors.
“It’s something that you don’t see nearly as much,” Shupe said.
“Especially in big cities. You have a lot of big hospital systems where doctors hand things off to other specialists. This is kind of considered the old-fashioned way, but I still appreciate it and small towns appreciate it.”
Both Shupe and his wife are medical professionals, but, his wife is now at home with their first child and pregnant with their second.
While Shupe says his specialty is family medicine, he is also capable of doing all procedures himself.
While in Atlanta, Shupe remembers having to refer patients to other doctors once the time for operations and procedures arrived. “I’d be like, ‘I can do [these procedures] guys, I promise,’ you know?”

Now that he and his family are settling down in Cullman, Shupe wants to carry out all necessary procedures himself.
“I want to engage in a full-scope of practice,” he said. He went on to say that he takes pride when people refer to him as their doctor.
As far as getting hired in Cullman, Shupe says it was fairly simple.
“The process was very easy, believe it or not. Everyone needs doctors like crazy. I know there are several people in Cullman doing what I do, but some of the older doctors are beginning to retire and things, which opens up the door for me.”
