CULLMAN – Recently, Cullman County residents have received phone calls from certain individuals claiming they represented credit card companies, sweepstakes companies, and the IRS. They are asking for personal information and money. These phone calls are scams.
“We in law enforcement are trying to make the public aware of all the current scams by going to senior centers, using social media and through other avenues so that people are able to stay one step ahead of the con artist," said Sheriff Matt Gentry.
Tips recommended by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Department:

If you get a call saying you are a winner, never pay any money to collect supposed sweepstakes winnings. Legitimate operations will not require you to pay to collect your winnings.

Never provide anyone with personal information such as bank accounts, pin numbers or Social Security numbers.

No charity will run a phone-only fundraiser, so ask the caller to please point you to a website with more information. If it is a legitimate organization, this will not be a problem.
