CULLMAN – For anyone in attendance during the Fourth of July celebration at Smith Lake Park, the first three-to-four minutes of the fireworks show seemed to be going smoothly.

About four minutes into the display things stopped going according to plan.

Cullman County Parks and Recreation Director Doug Davenport said one of the tubes containing a larger canister that was meant to be shot into the sky malfunctioned. It exploded within the canister and caused damage to the control panels being used by the show's operators.

The operators, Adamsville, Ala. based Pyro Productions, have decided to give Cullman County a do-over.

According to Davenport, the annual fireworks show at Smith Lake Park costs the county $20,000.

The show has been rescheduled for July 25 at Smith Lake Park. Admission to the show will be free.

"No one will be at the gate, so it will be free to anyone who wants to come, whether you were there on the Fourth or not," Davenport said.

Pyro Productions, who has done pyrotechnical work for the Super Bowl and musicians, lost $3,500 worth of equipment during the Independence Day malfunction.

"We'll have vendors at the park all day," Davenport said. "Bama Country Band will take the stage at 5 p.m.," Davenport said.

"There will be no charge to come into the park and watch the fireworks show, which should be about 20 minutes."

Although the the Fourth of July show only had 7,000 attend, Davenport expects upwards of 10,000 to be at the park on July 25.

"Some people may have been at another fireworks show, or with family, or the weather may be deterred them from coming out," Davenport said.

"But, if the weather is good, we should have over 10,000," he said.
