HANCEVILLE – Last Tuesday began the first day of Hanceville Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. The day’s theme was ‘Hometown Heroes’ and the children met numerous personalities that the area's residents consider their local heroes. Behind the library, the youngsters met with these champions of the town and asked them about their jobs.

“Yesterday was about the local superheroes or hometown heroes like policemen, firemen, etc.,” said Alma Briscoe, library volunteer. “We got to meet Mayor Kenneth Nail, the Chief of Police Bob Long, Fire Chief Roger Green, and others.”

For many of the children, the highlight of the day was riding on the county’s oldest fire truck, which belongs to the Hanceville Fire Department.

Mayor Nail drove the fire truck, accompanied by a police escort.

Later, the children struck a pose as they were photographed from atop the 100-foot ladder truck, but what surprised many of them was the sudden water blast that rained down from the firehose in the sky.

“There were 36 children and 22 adults that came, and so far, we’ve heard nothing but positive things about the event,” said Librarian Shirley Burden. “We hope to see you all next Tuesday; we will be having someone here from the McWane Center. It will be a Science Superhero program.”

“It was awesome today,” said Marsha Hawthorne, a parent at the event. “Thanks to all of our hometown heroes for making today great memories and for all you do every day!”

Children interested in attending the library’s Summer Reading Program are welcome to attend each Tuesday at 2 p.m. through the month of June.
