CULLMAN – Every year, we remember our veterans who have given everything to protect our homeland and others throughout the world. The American Legion, along with the Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting Memorial Day Ceremonies at Sportman’s Lake as well as a unique display on the fence at Veteran’s Park.

“The American Legion and VFW have always alternated the Memorial Day Ceremony at Sportsman’s Lake and this year the American Legion will be sponsoring the Memorial Day Ceremony at Sportsman’s Lake,” said Mary Reid of the Ladies Auxiliary.

In a long tradition among the American Legion, poppies will be placed on the fence in Cullman’s Veteran’s Park at Sportsman Lake. According to the American Legion, the Poppy Program raises community awareness and respect for our veterans by educating Auxiliary members and the public about the symbol of the poppy, taken from a line in the poem “In Flanders Fields” written on the battlefront during World War I by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D.

“In support of the Legion, the Ladies Auxiliary that was re-activated in 2014, will be assisting with a special project of covering the fence around the Veterans’ Park at Sportsman’s Lake with crocheted and knitted red poppies in remembrance of our deceased veterans,” Reid said.

“Since there are those who cannot crochet or knit, poppies will be furnished free of charge to place on the fence.  The Auxiliary asked the DAR members if they would like to help, and both organizations will have booths right outside the gate distributing poppies after the ceremony on the 23rd. Those that can knit or crochet, are welcome to place their own poppies on the fence.”

A moving and inspirational ceremony with several speeches and performances is sure to remind all about the true meaning of this holiday weekend.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on the 23rd at Sportsman Lake.
