CULLMAN – The American Red Cross hosted a “pillow fight” on Saturday, outside of Walmart, in an effort to gather supplies for their new disaster shelter facility on Beech Avenue in Cullman.

“We have a new disaster shelter here in Cullman over on Beech Ave., which is the same road the county jail is on,” said Ken Brown, local Red Cross Board Member. “It is capable of sheltering up to 250 people if there is an emergency. Tornado season is right around the corner. So we’re accepting donations for pillows and blankets to help us stock up the shelter.”

The pillows cost $2.58 each at Walmart, but anyone can donate as much as they like to assist the Red Cross.

New unwrapped pillows and pillowcases are also appreciated. No used items can be accepted. Keep in mind, the shelter can be used to house residents after any type of disaster.

“We’re always accepting donations and we count on the generosity of the American people to keep the Red Cross going,” Brown added.

“It’s Americans helping Americans. We have no paid staff here anymore; it’s all volunteers. If anyone has any questions about it, they can give me a call. My number is 256-507-1121.”

Those that missed the chance to donate to the Red Cross when they were at Walmart, can still do so by writing a check to the American Red Cross and mailing it to the Red Cross at 1803 Beech Avenue Southeast, Cullman, AL 35055. For more information, call the American Red Cross at 256-734-0921.
