Cullman City Parks & Recreation has shown a long history of bringing in new and innovative facilities and programs into our community with multiple new projects and developments in the works at any given time. CP&R's Community Garden will be the newest of these projects opening up on Tuesday, March 31, at Nesmith Park.
So why garden? CP&R will be offering the Community Garden to anyone to utilize for just $35 for the entire 2015 season. This will make gardening available to those with limited space or resources, as well as allow for gardening to be a group activity in which to meet friends and enjoy some leisure time outdoors. Aside from the fun aspect, gardening also offers the opportunity for cheap produce to be used in your kitchen at a much more affordable rate than the grocery store; healthier eating will be another major benefit of the garden, offering fresh vegetables to those who sign up for a plot.
In addition to the available plots, a series of gardening classes will be offered taking individuals through the entire process from planting, nurturing, maintaining, and collecting produce in the garden. Classes are $75 and will be held on Tuesday nights at 6 p.m. at the Community Garden starting on March 31. These classes will be a great way to learn about gardening and have a successful plot in the garden; a gardening plot is also include with these classes.
CP&R's Community Garden will also be utilized in several other ways including educational such as teaching area students about the gardening process, gardening for CP&R's special needs program, and a program raising produce to be donated to local charities by those who opt in to the program in the garden. The project has also been aided by a partnership with the Cullman Agriplex and Cullman County Extension Office who will assist in the educational needs of the garden.
Gardening plots will be 4'x8' spaces in raised beds; all gardening tools and equipment will be provided for those with gardening plots as well as several water hoses for watering garden plots. A group work session will be held each Saturday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the garden where our gardening instructor will be on site to answer any questions or assist in the gardening process.
