CULLMAN – Last Saturday folks all about town had a wonderful opportunity to complete their Christmas shopping while supporting a great cause. Relay For Life of Cullman County hosted a Christmas festival and bake sale at the East Point Community Center, located on Alabama Highway 69, near the intersection of Alabama Highway 157.
Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand for photographs and to share the Christmas wishes from young and old alike. Free coffee and cocoa was available and door prizes were given out to various people throughout the day.
“This is a fundraiser for Relay For Life and there are a few of our teams here today,” said Kelly Holmes, Relay For Life volunteer. “We are calling this our Christmas Festival. We have a little bake sale going on and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be here from 1-5 p.m.”
The event was a group effort and there were several different Relay For Life teams that participated in Saturday’s festival.
“The teams that are represented here today are Purple Skies, the Speegle Family, Hanceville Nursing & Rehab, as well as a couple of individuals who wanted to help,” Holmes stated.
Relay For Life of Cullman County raises money for the American Cancer Society, who then uses the donated money to fund cancer research and to educate the community about the importance of prevention and early detection. The funds also go to help support cancer patients and advocate improving their lives.
“I am the Chair of Team Development,” said Helen Allen. “This past Relay marked my 20th year to be involved. We’ve seen a lot of progress over the years. We still have a long way to go, especially in diagnostic equipment and things like that. It’s a group effort from all of us and we all have a passion for it or we wouldn’t be here.”
