CULLMAN – Southern Accents was the gracious host to author Morgan Murphy on Saturday. Murphy held a unique and very personable book signing while promoting his new book “Bourbon & Bacon”. A lover of good ole southern cuisine, Morgan is also a judge on the Travel Channel's TV show American Grilled and has authored several other books including the “Off The Eaten Path”, which includes a recipe from Cullman’s own Rumors Deli.
“My latest book, “Bourbon & Bacon”, is number one in Wine and Spirits right now,” Murphy explained. “It’s a collection of 150 of my favorite recipes. About a third of the book is my own recipes, another third are from my favorite chefs across the south, the other third are the best of Southern Living’s archives. I combed their archives for the best bacon and the best bourbon recipes.”
“I’ve visited dozens of distilleries and pig farms across Kentucky and the rest of the south interviewing farmers and master distillers,” he continued. “I give recommendations of which bacons to buy and why you should buy premium bacon, and then give a lot of recipes that use both of those ingredients. I then give a history of bourbon and then there are 75 bourbon recommendations for people who may not be familiar with bourbon as bourbon can be overwhelming.”
Murphy looked right at home as he sat and signed copies of his book at Southern Accents. A true southern gentleman, he was gracious and kind as he explained all the many aspects of bourbon, as compared to other common alcoholic drinks.
“Bourbon is the other southern drink – it’s sunshine in a glass,” he smiled warmly. “So I try to distill that, if you will, for the average reader.”
