MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Public Health was notified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting healthcare professionals not to use any sterile products from Specialty Compounding, LLC, of Cedar Park, Texas.

After 15 patients who received calcium gluconate injections were hospitalized, the FDA announced a voluntary recall of all sterile products produced and distributed by this company. Calcium gluconate is used to treat heart disease, high potassium levels and calcium deficiencies.

An alert was sent to Alabama providers Friday night, including hospitals and pharmacists. The Alabama Department of Public Health subsequently learned that products from Specialty Compounding, LLC, may have been shipped directly to patients in Alabama and these patients are being contacted directly by the company.

Individuals should contact their healthcare provider if they have used any sterile medications shipped from this pharmacy since May 9, 2013, and are experiencing any symptoms that may be related to taking these medicines. Even in the absence of symptoms, these patients should stop using these products and contact their healthcare providers to get replacement medications.
