CULLMAN – Due to the expected high amount of boat traffic on Smith Lake this 4th of July weekend, Sheriff Matt Gentry has activated the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol. The Sheriff's Office will also have extra patrols on the highways in the Smith Lake area due to high traffic.

"This is the busiest time of the year on Smith Lake and the Lake Patrol Deputies provide a valuable safety resource for the community. We have had our School Resource Deputies patrolling more around the lake area as well since school got out due to the increased traffic already," said Gentry. "They will continue their increased patrols until school starts back."

The CCSO asks residents to use good judgment on the lake and follow the following safety tips:

* Avoid alcohol while boating.
* Wear a life jacket.
* Be aware of other boaters, swimmers and children.
