Saints’ Guthery takes title in Jesse Owens XC Classic

DANVILLE – St. Bernard's Casey Guthery claimed his second straight title at the 18th Annual Jesse Owens Cross Country Classic Saturday morning at Oakville Indian Mounds Park.

Competing in the green division, featuring 1A-3A schools and 359 runners, Guthery posted a time of 16:29.84 to edge out teammate Andrew Sweeney for the title. Sweeney was second at 16:32.23.

Guthery was coming off a personal best of 16:21.74 the week before in the Kudzu Hills Invitational at Cold Springs.

The Saints wound up fourth with 116 points. Their area foe from Cullman County, the Cold Springs Eagles, got second place to American Christian Academy from Tuscaloosa. The Eagles had 99 points while the Patriots provided the lowest score with 59.

Cold Springs has finished higher in four consecutive meets running against St. Bernard.

Jared Stanley of Cold Springs took home fourth at 16:45.88 with his teammate C.J. Lang seventh at 16:55.20. Jonathan Collett of the Eagles earned a 26th place finish at 17:47.81.

Mason Harris of the Eagles was 31st at 17:54.24 and Trentan Williams 37th with a time of 18:07.37.

Marco Tona from St. Bernard was 32nd at 17:56.55, Caleb Guthery 39th at 18:09.70 and Isaiah Robles 49th with a time of 18:42.62

 

Mami has a solid run to help Lady Saints finish third.

St. Bernard runner Leahrose Mami enjoyed her best time of the season, finishing 3rd in the 18th Jesse Owens Cross Country Classic Saturday morning at Oakville Indian Mounds Park, the site of the Alabama High School State Championships each November.

Mami came in with a time of 19:34.54 under sunny skies, temperature in the 60s and a slight breeze. The junior for the Lady Saints had won two consecutive titles entering this weekend of competition as she and her squad took part in the green division with 223 runners.

St. Bernard was third to Hebron Christian and American Christian Academy with 93 points. Area rival Cold Springs finished sixth with 214 points. The green division consisted of schools in the 1A-3A classification of the AHSAA.

Ivy Edge of St. Bernard took home eighth with a time of 20:13.37, Holly Pond's Camilla Chambers 12th at 20:29.66, Claire Sanders of St. Bernard 27th at 21:42.37 and Sadie Terry of Cold Springs 28th with a time of 21:46.42.

Over 5,000 runners in three different classifications took to the state meet course with the state meet four weeks away in Lawrence County.

St. Bernard will rest for a couple of days then return to competition for the Hay of a Run Invitational Tuesday at Fairview Town Park. Nineteen schools are entered in the varsity divisions with St. Bernard facing Fairview, Falkville, Holly Pond, Hanceville, Vinemont, West Point, Arab and Brewer from around the area.

The varsity girls will run at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 5 p.m. and the junior high at 5:30 p.m.
