MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairview has been appointed by Alabama Speaker of the House Mac McCutcheon to the Joint Legislative Transportation Committee.

Shedd issued the following statement Thursday:

‘I want to thank Alabama Speaker of the House Mac McCutcheon for appointing me this week to serve on the Permanent Joint Transportation Committee for the next four years.

“This legislative committee consists of legislators in the Alabama House and Senate that will have broad new oversight powers regarding the Alabama Department of Transportation as a result of legislation passed in Governor Kay Ivey’s infrastructure legislation.

“This committee will meet quarterly to review and can concur or amend ALDOT’s transportation plan.

“We will focus on the state as a whole in transportation planning with safety, economic development and congestion relief as priorities.

“I am a firm believer that turn lanes add safety and prevent accidents and injuries, therefore I will be pushing for more turn lanes at intersections statewide and certainly in my district.

“Safer highways must be top priority in our state.

“We also must focus on transportation projects that enhance economic growth in our state and certainly I will keep an eye out for improving rural Alabama.

“Addressing traffic congestion  and improved traffic flow has to be a high priority of the overall plan. Congestion can be dangerous, costly and frustrating.

“On the local level, I hope this position will help me complete Governor Guy Hunt’s efforts to four-lane Highway 278 East from Cullman to Gadsden including new St. Bernard bridges; at least let’s finish it to Snead in Blount County.

“Working closely with Senator Garlan Gudger in his new position on the State ATRIP Committee and with Governor Kay Ivey and her team, I think we can help our commissioners with more funding for county roads.

“I know there was a lot of pushback about the infrastructure legislation we passed, but this oversight committee is a huge new way for us to make sure, as the new law states that the new gas tax revenue is actually spent for roads, highways and bridges and not on bureaucracy, buildings, vehicles, etc. and I intend to make sure of that and make sure we get our fair share in our area!
