DODGE CITY, Ala. –  The Dodge City Town Council Thursday night voted to cancel this year’s Dodge City Day due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual event is usually held near the end of May/beginning of June.

Mayor Tawana Canada said, “There’s just too many events that pertain to children and seniors. I think we should go ahead and cancel the event.”

The council voted to set residential sewage tap (hook-up) fee and rates. The fee was set at $2,000, which can be paid in increments of $100 for 20 months. Rates are $25 for the first 6,000 gallons used, then $4 per 1,000 gallons.

Dodge City’s municipal elections will now take place at the Dodge City Community Center. Elections were previously held at town hall, but, according to Canada, the community center is more conducive to social distancing.

In other business, the council voted to place a stop sign on the portion of the Jack’s parking lot along Howard Circle. Canada noted some drivers already treat the exit like it has a stop sign, but said a sign needs to be put there so drivers will stop.

The Town has hired a temporary employee who takes the temperatures of people coming into town hall and keeps the number of people down in the building. The council voted to employee the person for eight weeks minimum with pay being $8 an hour.

“There have been people turned away (from the building due to their temperature being too high),” said Canada.

Dodge City will participate in the annual Back to School Sales Tax Holiday July 17 -19, 2020.

Dodge City’s Census Day will take place June 5, 2020 in front of town hall.

Said Canada, “We’re going to keep it simple.”

The Town will have hot dogs and drinks to give out and a tablet on stand-by so residents can complete their census questionnaires if they haven’t already. The event will also have prize drawings for $50 gift cards from Jack’s, Pop’s Place Bar BQ, S&S Grocery and Dollar General Dollar, along with a grand prize: a $500 VISA card.
