CULLMAN – It was a great year for the Cullman High School Cheer team after taking both the regional and state level competitions by storm. Hours of practice and months of preparation have paid off for the team as they look forward to the Universal Cheerleading Association’s National Championship in February.

“UCA High School Nationals is a huge deal,” said Team Sponsor Haley Nix. “The best teams are there, and you know that these teams have put in hours of practice preparing for this event. The girls competed at regionals at Sparkman High School, and this is where they received their bid to Nationals. They were named UCA Super Varsity Regional Champions. This was exciting for us not only because we won, but also because we were successful competing in a larger division than normal.”

They proved by winning UCA Regionals and the AHSAA 6A State Championship that Cullman has returned,” Haley Nix, Team Sponsor.

According to Nix, the girls put in many hours of work to get to this point, which is no easy feat, especially when the team had not competed for a year before.

“We started practice in May of 2014, and we have been preparing for this trip since that point,” Nix said. “The girls practice typically 2-3 times a week along with attending tumble classes. They also attended UCA summer camp and choreography camp. I am proud of this team because these girls have made sure that people know they are back this year. We took a year off from competing last year, so returning can be a difficult experience.”

Through amazing talent and teamwork, the team will be in Orlando from February 7-10. Nix wanted to thank one other special person that helped the girls achieve their glorious comeback.

“They proved by winning UCA Regionals and the AHSAA 6A State Championship that Cullman has returned,” Nix said. “I also want to thank Blair Gatlin for everything he has done this year. He is extremely knowledgeable and talented. He has experience cheering at multiple colleges and universities such as Snead State, Wallace State and Hawaii Pacific University. I am very thankful for the time he has spent working with these girls.”
