CULLMAN, Ala. – The main branch of the Cullman County Public Library System has a robust calendar of events that are held weekly for the community. Its itinerary is about to get a little more packed as it adds three new programs.

One new program is Strum along with Stu, an introduction to the ukulele. This class is an excellent opportunity for musicians who are just beginning their journeys or curious cats who want to see if the stringed instrument is a good match; any and all talent levels are welcome. The library will hold an informational session on Saturday, April 13, at 9:30 a.m. in the Special Collections Room. The library does have two ukuleles available in circulation for patrons to borrow, but there is no guarantee either instrument will be available at any given time.

Circulation Manager Laura Benton said, “We would like to invite anyone who is interested in learning ukulele or practicing ukulele or jamming with other people to come to the library and find out what it is all about.”

For young future writers, the library is also holding a Young Writers Workshop for children and teens on Wednesday, April 10 at 3:30 p.m.

“We wanted to put this on the calendar in celebration of ‘Encourage a Young Writer Day.’” Benton shared.

Encouraging young writers is certainly the goal of the afternoon clinic. It will be hosted by local author Dorenda Doyle. Doyle’s portfolio boasts a line of fictional children’s books, often following a child every teacher knows as “that kid.” Flourishing novelists and journalists will learn basic storytelling and writing techniques, all from the perspective of and with help from a published author with experience in writing professionally.

The last exciting addition to the library’s calendar is Walking Wednesdays. Patrons can meet at the library each Wednesday at 10 a.m. The gathered group will then take a short walk across the Warehouse District to the newly reconstructed Depot Park to stroll around and discuss life and literature, enjoying the sunshine or just the company. This program is weather dependent; it’s suggested that interested walkers call the library before a walk if the weather is questionable.

“Moms or dads with strollers – we would like people of all ages to come,” Benton smiled.  “We will have one or two staff members join in on the walk.”

The Cullman County Public Library’s main branch is located at 200 Clark St. NE and can be reached at 256-734-1068.
