CULLMAN COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT: day 1

HANCEVILLE – The 2017 Cullman County Middle School Basketball Tournament kicked off this afternoon at Hanceville High School.

The first game of the night pitted the West Point Lady Warriors against the Vinemont Lady Eagles. West Point dominated, 40-2.

The Lady Warriors came out and dominated the boards from the tip off to the end of the quarter, with a score of 14-0. Summer Mendoza led the scoring in the first for the West Point with six. The Lady Eagles were held scoreless again in the second, with the Lady Warriors upping their lead to 36-0.

After the break, the Lady Eagles turned up their defense, holding the Lady Warriors at bay, but again, comping up scoreless. End of three, the score remained 36-0.

The fourth was played on a running clock, with Lady Eagles narrowly avoiding the shutout when Kendall Harbison scored two.

Final score: West Point 40, Vinemont 2

Timberly Shadix led the Warriors with nine points, Nikki Tyree scored eight, Summer Mendoza six, Alexus Wells five, Kristine Shadix four, and Brylie Pearce and Alexis Kimbril each had three.

 

Holly Pond 26, Good Hope 22

The second game of the night pitted the Good Hope Lady Raiders against the Holly Pond Lady Broncos.

Both teams came out playing good defense, making for a low-scoring first, with Good Hope on top 5-4. Stout defensive play continued in the second, but the Lady Raiders again held on to a slight lead, 14-12.

Physical games from both squads led to a 21-20 score after three, but the Lady Broncos broke free in the final quarter, going on to win, 26-22.

Leading the Lady Broncos was Madyson Rickman with 10 points. Paris Pannell and Samantha Giles each had six points.

The Lady Raiders was led by Desire’ Odachowski with 10 points while Rechelle McLeod and Allie Sartin notched three apiece.

 

Cold Springs 23, Fairview 15

The third game of the night matched up the Fairview Lady Aggies against the Cold Spring Lady Eagles.

Both teams were trying to find their grooves in the first half, which ended with the Lady Eagles up, 11-4. In a physical second half, Cold Springs held on to the lead, making it 15-8 after three.

The Lady Eagles went on to win, 23-15.

Reba McCarn and Haley Williams led Cold Springs with six points each.

Cassidy Hutchison paced the scoring for the Aggies with five.

 

Parkside 44, Hanceville 17

The final game of the night saw the hosting Hanceville Lady Bulldogs against the Parkside Panthers.

The Lady Panthers cruised to a 44-17 win, overpowering the Lady Bulldogs the whole game.

The Lady Panthers were led by Kiley Stevens and Makayla Latham, each with 10 points. Morgan Lindsay had nine points, while Emma Garcia had six on the night.

Leading the Lady Bulldogs was Lasundra Turner with nine.

The tournament continues Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
