BERLIIN, Ala. – The Berlin Volunteer Fire Department held a Pancake Breakfast with Santa fundraiser on Saturday. The event took place from 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. with a drive thru and walk-in option for pick up.

“We are doing this for the less fortunate children in Welti, Holly Pond and Fairview schools. We have lists for the kids and everything, and we are going to buy gifts for them and when we get through with buying the gifts, if we have any money left, we are going to divide it up amongst the families and give them gift certificates for the local grocery stores out here, so they can go get groceries,” explained Fire Chief Ralph Laney.

This event was completely volunteer based and accepted donations only for entrance into the raffle drawing for the 7ft tall stuffed bear from the F.A.O Swartz Toy Store in NYC, which retails for $1,000.00. Raffle donations were $1 for one entry and $5 for six entries.

“We know there has been over 300 people because we ran out of syrup packets. There 300 of those,” said Chief Laney. “There is more syrup, but that is how we know there has already been more than 300. It has just been busy since 7:00 a.m. and everything we have taken in is going to go to the kids.”

The drawing for the grand prize of the 7ft stuffed bear took place and was revealed that the winner was 21-year-old Katelin Yahn.

A statement from the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page read, “Thank you will never be enough for the amount of support we were shown through this whole process this year. Our community and department members went above and beyond for this. And even though ‘thank you’ will never be enough, I want to say ‘thank you.’ Thank you to our department members and others who helped decorate last night and who showed up starting at 4:30 a.m. this morning to prepare for today.”

It continued, “Thank you to all of our sponsors for all of your donations, without you this wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you to our community for donating and showing up today, we enjoyed seeing each of your faces and hope you enjoyed our event. Thank you to the ones outside of our community who still made the trip to see us today. We can’t wait to see what a turn out we have next year!”
