The following was printed in The Cullman Tribune’s special yearly edition, “Community Matters.”

GARDEN CITY, Ala. – Garden City’s Treasures by Hea offers like-new to brand new items and great deals. The store opened Jan. 14, 2020 and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 640 Old Hwy. 31.

Each day, items are a set price. Tuesdays, items are $3 per plus tax. Wednesdays, it’s $1 per item plus tax. Thursdays are 50 cents per item plus tax, and Fridays and Saturdays are $5 per item plus tax.

Treasures by Hea is owned by Heather Millwood Hudson, who runs the store with help from family members like mother Brenda McSpadden.

Said McSpadden, “We started in January- my daughter wanted to open a business. She had lots of help that she used, so she just started this where she got all Amazon items, and we have different days for different things (on sale in the bins) for different prices. Her husband is in the military; we just do this to help her.”

Why Garden City?

“We looked at Cullman and Garden City, but we thought that Garden City would be a good place for the business because there was nothing like that here, so she thought that would be good too,” said McSpadden. “We’ve met lots of nice people and I think everybody loves it, because everybody comes out and they shop and everybody’s been so, so friendly. We like it here because it’s just country people like us, and we give them discounts and all kinds of things and they love it. We appreciate Garden City, they welcomed us in, especially her, to open up the business and they come out and support us, and I really appreciate that; I’m sure Cullman does, too. We’ve had all kind of people from different cities.”

Treasures by Hea offers a large variety of discounted items.

“Just a variety of things at a discount,” said McSpadden. “People come here, and they leave with a bag of items for like $10, whereas you go to a chain business and get a bag of items and you’ll spend like $40, $50. We have things like clothes, electronics- we have books, we have plenty of books. Right now, all of our books are free because we have so many. We just offer people somewhere to go and get stuff at discounted prices and what we offer is 99% new stuff.”

McSpadden said the store is a family affair.

“I’ll just come up here and sit with her a little bit and help her whenever she can’t work,” she said. “My mom helps; it’s just a family thing. We love it here, we really do. It’s a lot of fun, she says it’s a lot of hard work, but I think it’s worth it.”

So where did the name come from?

McSpadden said of her daughter, “Her name is Heather, so it’s Treasures by Hea, and the reason she did that is because her nephew calls her ‘Hea Hea,’ so she named it Treasures by Hea, short for Heather.”
