CULLMAN – On Saturday, Brooks’ Place celebrated its 14th annual Safe Kids Expo at Sportsman Lake Park in Cullman.  The event, sponsored by several area organizations and businesses, featured free food and drinks, child ID kits and services, Cullman Fire and Police vehicles, the Cullman Police helicopter, inflatables, face painting, puppet shows by students from Wallace State, and health screenings by Cullman Regional.  Exhibits and booths included Cullman Caring for Kids, the Cullman County Human Trafficking Task Force, Flourish of Cullman, D.A.R.E. and Bikers Against Child Abuse.

Brooks’ Place Executive Director Gail Swafford said, “Safe Kids is an event we’ve had for about 14 years.  It’s an event Brooks’ Place and others sponsor; it’s our way of giving back to the community.  We want to provide an event for children and families to come out and learn about safety, but have a good time.”

Swafford also shared a little about what Brooks’ Place and its partners do.

“Brooks’ Place is a nonprofit agency.  What we do is to provide services for abused children, and the way we’re able to provide services is through grants and through private donations.  What’s very important to know about Brooks’ Place is that it’s not just the staff at Brooks’ Place that ministers to these families; there’s a group of area professionals, such as law enforcement, DHR, mental health, juvenile probation and the District Attorney’s office to hopefully get justice for these children who’ve been hurt, but also to help children and families heal from what’s happened to them.  It’s a joint effort; we couldn’t do it without all the other partners we work with.”
