BREMEN - The Cold Springs Eagles (2A, Region 5) took on the Winston County Yellow Jackets in a homecoming matchup Friday night, and the Jackets took home a decisive 40-8 victory.

Both teams got off to a rough start, leaving the score 0-0 after the first quarter. However, the Yellow Jackets picked up tempo in the second, quickly taking the lead 8-0 with 11:38 to go in the half. Cold Springs gained possession but couldn’t gain any ground and turned the ball back over to the Yellow Jackets who quickly put up another touchdown making the score 16-0.

The Eagles regained possession and marched down the field, ultimately handing the ball to senior running back Calvin McNabb who powered through for a 3-yard touchdown, cutting the score to 16-8 with 1:04 left in the opening half.

To open the second half, the Yellow Jackets’ offense pressured the Eagle defense and marched down the field, scoring a touchdown followed by a 2-point conversion to go up 24-8 over the Eagles with 7:15 left in the third. The Eagles took possession but turned the ball over on downs on their next possession.

Both teams came out ready for battle in the fourth, but the Eagles turned the ball over on downs and the Yellow Jackets took advantage with a breakaway run of 80 yards for a touchdown, putting them up 32-8. An Eagle fumble was then recovered by the Yellow Jackets and returned 55 yards for a touchdown, upping their lead to 40-8, which was the final score of the game.

The loss puts the Eagles at 4-3 so far this season and 2-2 in the region. Cold Springs will travel to Tarrant for another regional matchup next week.
