Bremen man charged with sexual abuse of a child

David Hyde (Cullman County Sheriff’s Office)

CULLMAN - The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office on July 5 arrested a Bremen man, David Brandon Hyde, 34, for sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old.  An investigator with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office specified only that, between Jan. 1, 2015 and Feb. 1, 2017, Hyde allegedly subjected a minor child to “sexual contact.”

Sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old is a special circumstance Class B felony that carries a prison term of 10 to 20 years and up to $30,000 in fines.

On Friday, July 6, Hyde was assigned a $10,000 property bond, and his case was assigned to District Judge Rusty Turner for a preliminary hearing on July 23.  As of the afternoon of Wednesday, July 11, Hyde remained in jail.

Court records did not indicate a history of sex crimes or crimes involving children, but this was Hyde’s third arrest this year.  In January, he was arrested for possession of a forged instrument in the form of counterfeit currency. On June 7, he pled guilty and was sentenced to 18 months’ probation.

While that case was still active, Hyde was arrested on May 15 when he was one of five passengers in a vehicle from which a bag of drugs was allegedly thrown during a police traffic stop.  No occupant of the vehicle admitted owning the bag, and all five occupants were charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine and alprazolam) and possession of drug paraphernalia.  When arrested on July 5 for sexual abuse, Hyde was out on bond in the drug case, which is still pending.
