LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Make time for the real reason for Memorial Day

Each year, a local veterans’ organization leads our county observance of Memorial Day. Since this occasion is meant to remember and honor those Americans who have perished in service to our nation, this is a more subdued and solemn event.

This year, our county Memorial Day observance will be hosted by Cullman VFW Post 2214 on Saturday, May 26, at 10 a.m., in Veterans’ Park at Sportsman Lake. Admission and parking are free. This observance is NOT just for veterans and those who have lost loved ones in combat. The public is encouraged to attend, to demonstrate its support for our military members and their families.

The Cullman Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will provide the color guard. A poem to the fallen will be read by a combat veteran. Those who have lost a loved one will be welcome to stand and speak about them. Sen. Paul Bussman will be the guest speaker and will express his gratitude, on behalf of the citizens of our community.

Our military has been at war, CONTINUOUSLY, since 9/11/2001 (17 years). We set aside one day, in every year, to remember our fallen. This year, PLEASE, before you shop, before you fish, before you ski or swim or BBQ, please take 45 minutes, bring older kids or grandkids, come visit the hallowed ground of Cullman Veterans’ Park, and just observe a quiet ceremony of pride and gratitude for the very few among us who stepped forward, defended our nation and lost their lives. If this once a year act is all your freedom costs you, then you are very blessed indeed.

Ken Brown, Colonel, U.S. Air Force (RET)
