1 dead, 1 injured in wreck at notoriously dangerous Hanceville intersection

HANCEVILLE - One person was killed and one injured Thursday night when a pick-up truck and 18-wheeler collided at what Hanceville residents say is a notoriously dangerous intersection.

The incident occurred around 5:05 p.m. at Alabama Highway 91 and Edmondson Road, according to Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail.

“An 18-wheeler was traveling west on Alabama Highway 91,” said Nail, “and a small pick-up truck was pulling out of Edmondson Road South and ran under the 18-wheeler, ejecting at least one person.”

One occupant of the pick-up truck died after being transported to UAB Hospital, confirmed Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick. The other occupant was transferred to an area hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not physically injured.

“We called the State Troopers in to investigate, and the light tower is lit up; there’s debris all in the roadway,” said Nail.

Members of Hanceville Fire and Rescue and the Hanceville Police Department worked the scene.

Nail expressed frustration about the “dangerous intersection,” asking, “How many people have to die before something is done?”

The mayor said the City has requested a red light at the intersection, but was told there was not enough cross traffic to warrant one. He said the City has even offered to pay for the light.

Highway 91 was closed down for about three hours. It is now open.

This is a developing story.
