CULLMAN - Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry today presented commendations to Cullman County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) Sgt. Daniel Cummings and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) State Trooper Rodney Wallace.

Cummings was injured in the line of duty last weekend in a scary incident in which he was hit and dragged by a vehicle. Wallace was recognized for his role in apprehending the suspects.

The incident unfolded on Saturday when Cummings responded to a domestic violence call and stopped two suspects in a car on Stewart Road in Good Hope. After Cummings made contact, the suspects drove off, hitting Cummings, running over him and dragging him underneath the vehicle.

ALEA troopers, CCSO deputies and Cullman City Police officers gave chase, and the suspects were apprehended a short time later, near the National Guard armory in Cullman.

Cummings sustained minor injuries, including bruises and scrapes. He was treated and released from Cullman Regional Saturday evening.

The two suspects were taken into custody upon apprehension. On Monday, charges were filed against them.

Caleb Dennison Alexander, 20, of Lacey's Spring, the driver of the vehicle, was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, first-degree receiving stolen property, second-degree domestic violence and second-degree escape. He was also charged with failure to appear (FTA) on previous charges of two counts of first-degree theft of property and third-degree burglary.

Alexander is being held in the Cullman County Detention Center without bond.

A passenger in the vehicle, Phillip Chad Pope, 22, of Cullman, was charged with first-degree receiving stolen property. He is being held in the Cullman County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond.
