CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission, at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 19, approved the allocation of over $760,000 for repairs along County Road 222. In January, a large sinkhole was found under the road after a portion gave way and revealed a massive void caused by a collapsed pipe. The damaged roadway is located near Interstate 65 Exit 305 northbound. Repairs are slated to begin Monday, March 25.

Cullman County Economic Development Director Matt Kinsland and his office have been working to set plans to repair the damaged roadway since its discovery. When petitioning the commission for funding, Kinsland revealed that many local and neighboring industries and municipalities have pledged monetary donations to assist in covering the cost of the undertaking. County Road 222 is a vital transportation avenue for Cullman and the surrounding area’s industrial and manufacturing industries.

Apel Machine and Supply will begin boring under the roadway and removing any extra material before placing new steel pipes to reinforce the roadway on Monday, March 25. The roadway will not close, but instead go down to one lane around the damaged area; motorists should plan for delays accordingly.

“We anticipate that everything will be in place for the contractor to start on Monday (March 25). They will have 45 calendar days to complete (it),” said Kinsland. “The road will not close at any point during the construction.”
